ABOUT
Dartmoor National Park is situated about 16 miles from Dartmouth and is the source of the River Dart. Dartmouth is located at the mouth of the estuary and by following the River Dart upstream you pass by a number of stunning South Devon towns and villages, including Stoke Gabriel, Totnes, Dartington and Buckfastleigh before you reach Dartmoor National Park.
Dartmoor is one of two National Parks found in Devon and is situated to the South West of the county. The National Park offers over 450 miles of public right of ways across a diverse and stunning landscape made up of heathlands, forests, river valleys and rugged tors. The landscape is protected by Dartmoor National Park Authority.
There is a whole host of activities and sports to be enjoyed whilst exploring Dartmoor. Take in the scenery by foot, bike or on horseback and get a real sense of just how wild the landscape is. You could have a go at Letterboxing, a traditional hobby undertaken on Dartmoor, it is similar to Geocaching, where various containers are hidden across the moors and found by solving clues to find a stamp and visitors book. For the more adventurous try a bit of kayaking on the numerous rivers that run across Dartmoor or climb one of the many tors to get a unique view of the countryside.
As well as enjoying the amazing sense of freedom and wonderful range of activities which Dartmoor provides, the landscape is also steeped in thousands of years of history. Evidence of prehistoric settlements, Bronze Age remains and medieval buildings and villages can be found scattered across the moorland. And many of the historical villages and hamlets are still welcoming visitors to this day.
Dartmoor National Park is also home to Dartmoor Wild Ponies which can be spotted across the moors and make the perfect subject for a photo.
