The English Riviera is home to the traditional seaside towns of Brixham, Paignton and Torquay and provides the quintessential English holiday experience.

History

The English Riviera is essentially the Torbay area and takes in 22 miles of the stunning South Devon coastline. It takes its name as the English Riviera from Victorian times, when visitors compared the warm climate to that found on the French Riviera. With the opening of the railway to Torquay and Paignton, Torbay enjoyed an increase in visitors and become a favourite holiday destination, as it still is to this day.

Across the River Dart from Dartmouth and a short drive away you’ll find Brixham, situated on the south west edge of the English Riviera. This working town and fishing port is centred around the harbour. Following the South West Coast Path west will take you to Berry Head, where breathtaking views across Tor Bay can be found.

To the east, past Broadsands and Goodrington, lies the town of Paignton, with its long sandy beach, pier, green and amusements it makes the perfect day trip destination that everyone can enjoy.

Venturing further around the bay either along the South West Coast Path, by road or by train you will reach Torquay.  A bustling town, with a lively harbour packed with bars and restaurants, a beach and Torre Abbey Meadows it offers an entertaining day out for friends and family.

Look Out For

When visiting the coast around the English Riviera keep an eye out for seals and dolphins which can be spotted in the waters around Torbay.
