Christmas Events in Dartmouth

Christmas is on its way, and Dartmouth is getting into the festive spirit. Shops are starting to sparkle, local businesses are busy preparing for their seasonal events, and the town has that familiar December buzz. There’s lots going on between now and the big day, from community traditions and live performances to cosy indoor activities – perfect whether you’re planning a family day out or just want to enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Take a look at the festive events coming up in Dartmouth and the surrounding area this season.

Candlelit Dartmouth

28th-29th November

Candlelit Dartmouth is one of the town’s best-known festive weekends. Royal Avenue Gardens hosts a Christmas Market from 10am-8pm on the Friday, with stalls, food, gifts and entertainment running throughout the day. There’s carol singing around the Christmas tree, the switching-on of the town’s lights, plus Father Christmas arrives in the town by fire engine before heading to his grotto.

On the Saturday evening, the lantern procession winds through Dartmouth from the Old Market Square to Royal Avenue Gardens, with families, schools and local groups carrying the paper lanterns they’ve made earlier in the month. It’s a simple tradition, but seeing the town illuminated in this way always feels special. The combination of the lights, the market, the music and the bustle of people makes Candlelit Dartmouth one of the most atmospheric weekends of the year.

Roaring Twenties Christmas at Coleton Fishacre

Selected dates between 22nd November-4th January

A short trip from Dartmouth, Coleton Fishacre is marking a special milestone this year. To celebrate the house turning 100 years old, the National Trust has leaned fully into its history with a Roaring Twenties-themed Christmas, complete with live pianists, pop-up dance lessons and a cosy vintage cinema playing reels from the era. Visitors can slip into the spirit of the decade at the secret Speakeasy bar, with sample cocktails inspired by the Savoy Cocktail Book.

Around the house, you’ll find plenty of ways to get involved – from polishing silver with the butler to kneading dough with the cook, or dressing up for a festive photo in the Saloon. Outside, the coastal garden is ideal for a winter wander with stunning sea views, and the café will be serving seasonal treats, including spiced lattes, indulgent hot chocolates and festive bites. The shop is also well worth a browse, with gifts, decorations and foodie treats perfect for Christmas.

Dartmouth Steam Railway Train of Lights

Selected dates between 28th November-30th December

The Christmas Train of Lights on the Dartmouth Steam Railway is one of the South West’s most magical festive experiences. The ride begins at Paignton’s Queen’s Park Station, aboard vintage carriages decorated with thousands of lights. As the train winds along the coast and through tunnels, you travel through illuminated woodland displays and arrive at Kingswear, where the lights of Dartmouth glimmer across the river. It’s about an 80-minute journey, and for 2025 the show includes new lineside displays and surprises along with the familiar scenes. It’s a great option if you’re looking for a festive night out that mixes old-fashioned steam charm with a bit of sparkle and wonder.

The Flavel Christmas Fair

13th December

The Flavel’s Christmas Fair is well worth a visit for those who prefer to buy their Christmas gifts from local makers. The building fills with stalls selling everything from handmade crafts and artwork to jewellery, homewares and festive bakes, and there’s always a friendly atmosphere as people browse, chat and pick up gifts. It’s a great opportunity to discover unique gifts you won’t come across in larger shops, whether you’re hunting for stocking-fillers or just treating yourself. Because the event is under one roof, it’s a relaxed way to do your Christmas shopping without worrying about the weather.

The Concert Band of Britannia Royal Naval College

13th December

Later the same day, the Concert Band of Britannia Royal Naval College hosts its annual Christmas Concert at The Flavel – a long-standing favourite for many residents. The evening features a mix of festive classics and traditional pieces, and offers a warm, uplifting end to a December day, whether you’ve been Christmas shopping or simply want to enjoy a seasonal night out.

Experience the Magic at Pennywell

21st November-24th December

If you’re willing to travel a little, Pennywell Farm offers a truly immersive Christmas experience. The trail takes you through a series of festive spaces, including a woodland lit for the season and a live nativity, with opportunities to meet some of Pennywell’s animals afterwards. Father Christmas has a grotto on-site and children can collect stamps in their Christmas passport as they explore.

There are firepits for toasting marshmallows, warm drinks to enjoy as you wander, and even a small bar for the adults. Pennywell Farm recommends allowing between 2–2.5 hours to make the most of everything on offer.

Christmas Illuminations at Babbacombe Model Village

22nd November – 4th January

Another nearby festive favourite is the Christmas Illuminations at Babbacombe Model Village, where miniature scenes are brought to life for the season. During the day, families can use the Christmas character spotter sheet to note down all the miniature Santas and Elves hidden throughout the model village, and into the evening, the gardens light up with their magical Christmas displays. It’s a great option for those looking for something a little different, and it’s sure to make lasting memories for the whole family.

Make the Most of the Festive Season

With markets, music, lanterns and plenty happening in and around the town, Dartmouth has a busy run-up to Christmas this year. Whether you’re joining the crowds for Candlelit Dartmouth, browsing for gifts at The Flavel, or heading slightly further afield for a bigger day out, there’s something for everyone to enjoy throughout November and December.

It’s a lovely time to explore, support local venues and makers, and experience the area with a bit of extra sparkle. For all the latest events, make sure to sign up to our newsletter – and don’t forget to tag us in your adventures on Instagram and Facebook!
