Explorer talks

The Explorer Series at The Flavel

Guest Blog Post – The Flavel

This autumn, The Flavel is launching an exciting new programme of talks: the Explorer Series. Designed to inspire, these events will bring remarkable adventurers to Dartmouth to share their stories of resilience, discovery and extraordinary achievement.

The series begins in October with an evening led by Conrad Humphreys – a professional sailor, motivational speaker and natural storyteller with more than two decades of experience navigating some of the world’s most challenging environments. Conrad has raced around the globe three times, claiming victory in the BT Global Challenge and becoming only the fifth British sailor to complete the legendary Vendée Globe.

Conrad Humphreys – Mutiny and Beyond

Conrad’s talk will take audiences on a fascinating journey into his recreation of one of history’s most extraordinary survival stories: Bligh’s Mutiny on the Bounty. As the professional skipper for Channel 4’s acclaimed series Mutiny, he led nine crew members on a daring 4,000-mile voyage from Tonga to Timor, surviving with just a few days’ rations and an open wooden boat. The feat retraced Lieutenant William Bligh’s epic journey across the South Pacific after the infamous mutiny.

In a special treat for Dartmouth, Conrad will also be bringing along the actual boat used in the series – the Bounty. Visitors can see it moored outside The Flavel from 6pm on the night of the talk. The bar will be open, offering the perfect chance to enjoy a drink and admire the boat before the event begins at 7.30pm.

For local interest, Conrad will also share insights from his film Bounty’s End, charting a memorable sail up the River Dart in his lugger. With stories from across his extraordinary career, this promises to be an evening not to miss.

Conrad’s talk is just the beginning. The Explorer Series will continue with:

  • Belinda Kirk (November) – Explorer, researcher and author, Belinda has spent three decades leading expeditions around the globe and is now a leading voice in exploring the link between adventure and wellbeing (#AdventureMind).

  • Ann Daniels (February) – Record-breaking polar explorer and the first woman, alongside teammate Caroline Hamilton, to reach both the North and South Poles as part of all-women teams. Ann is a renowned speaker on leadership, teamwork and the environment.

Join us at The Flavel for this inspiring series of talks and be transported to the ends of the earth through the eyes of those who have truly explored it.
