A popular spot for tourists and locals, Dartmouth Castle and the area that surrounds it has long been a well-liked destination for walkers, boat-trippers, history buffs and general visitors. The captivating views, sheltered nearby coves and intriguing Dartmouth Castle itself, brings people from all over to admire this part of the coastline.

Over 600 years old, Dartmouth Castle stands at the mouth of the Dart Estuary and has been an important line of defence for Dartmouth Harbour throughout its lifetime. The earliest parts of this artillery fort date back to the 1380s and towards the end of the 15th century the castle was expanded to include a new artillery tower and protective chain that linked it to the other side of the river. Dartmouth Castle was in service up until the Second World War and one of its most charming features is that it sits alongside St. Petrox ChurchSt. Petrox Church is one of the oldest churches in Dartmouth and the earliest record of it dates back to 1192.

Nowadays, Dartmouth Castle is run and managed by English Heritage, who help to maintain its impressive structure and welcome visitors throughout the year. There’s plenty to explore inside the castle as well as some beautiful scenery surrounding the fort.
