Dartmouth River Cruise: Interesting Facts and Guide to Cruising!

Guest Blog Post – Celebrity Cruises*

Few experiences rival a Dartmouth River cruise if you’re looking for a delightful and unique day out. Dartmouth, in South Devon, has a rich history, and cruising down the River Dart is the best way to enjoy the incredible views and fascinating places.

Here’s everything you need to know about cruising on the River Dart, as well as some tips for your trip.

The River Dart

The River Dart flows from its source in Dartmoor, winding through tranquil farms and beautiful landscapes before reaching Dartmouth.

The port regularly hosts visiting cruise ships and superyachts. International and local visitors flock to Dartmouth–after all, European cruises are to die for and often stop off at this charming seaside town.

The river is an important part of Devon’s history as a trade route and for naval activity. The best way to enjoy your cruise is to immerse in this incredible naval heritage amid the stunning scenery.

Setting Off

There are several choices for your Dartmouth River cruising experience, from short trips to full-day excursions. One of the most popular choices is the Kingswear Castle–the last coal-fired paddle steamer in the UK.

If you prefer a private river adventure, there are boats for hire, including a paddle steamer. You could even test your skills on a fishing trip!

Some cruises offer a hop-on, hop-off service to explore at your leisure. There are also themed cruises, including food-centred ones. Plus, some offer adult beverages for a thoroughly relaxing experience.

If you can’t decide, consider the Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat, which offers a steam train ride along the coast, a ferry crossing, and a river cruise, covering everything in one fun day.

Where to start

The town of Dartmouth is the primary departure point for river cruises. The Dartmouth ferry operates regularly across the river, including on bank holidays and Christmas Day.

What You’ll See

There is something for everyone to enjoy on a River Dart cruise.

History

Historic buildings line the river, including medieval structures like castles, forts, bridges, and churches.

The illustrious Dartmouth Castle was built in the 14th century to protect the port. On the opposite bank, Kingswear Castle was built to cover the river from both sides. Back in the day, an iron chain was stretched between the castles, effectively blocking enemy ships from passing.

Bayard’s Cove Fort, Dartmouth’s final defence against attacks from the water, was built on the edge of town. The heavy guns here were legendary!

Wildlife

The River Dart is home to a variety of wildlife. The surrounding area is a designated National Landscape, so nature enthusiasts have plenty to appreciate.

Keep an eye out for seals basking on rocks and birds, like Ospreys, Kingfishers, Cormorants, and even Little Egrets.

Scenic landscapes

Nothing is more soothing than enjoying nature. On your cruise, you can look forward to lush greenery, rolling hills, and quaint fishing villages that look like they were plucked from storybooks. The landscape also becomes a palette of colour in spring when wildflowers bloom.

Local attractions

Many river cruises offer stops at local attractions. For instance, Agatha Christie’s home, Greenway House has guided tours of the gardens and home where the famous author lived.

Dartmouth Museum is also a must for nautical buffs to learn about Dartmouth’s amazing sea-faring history.

Tips for a Memorable Experience

  • Book in advance: During peak tourist season, book ahead of time, especially for any themed cruises.
  • Dress comfortably: The river gets breezy, even in warmer months, so bring a light jacket. Comfortable shoes are also essential for exploring.
  • Snack hack: Bring snacks or a picnic if your cruise is not catered.
  • Plan your route: Consider what attractions you want to visit and check the schedules of the cruise operators, as they differ depending on the time of year.
  • Take your time: Take time to enjoy everything fully and get the most from your adventure.

Conclusion

Cruising the River Dart is a scenic journey that immerses you in history, fauna, and flora. Whether you are a local adventurer or a first-time visitor, a river cruise in Dartmouth is a brilliant blend of relaxation and fascination.
