Christmas Days Out with the National Trust

Guest Blog Post – National Trust English Riviera

The nights are drawing in, it’s getting colder, and Christmas isn’t far away. Which means it’s time to get into the festive spirit – and there’s no better way than visiting your local National Trust places.

With historic houses decorated in the style of Christmases gone by, winter gardens with the crunch of frost underfoot and family trails waiting to be explored, or shopping for stocking fillers and treats, let the National Trust add a sprinkle of magic to your festive days out this holiday season.

Christmas at Greenway

11am-4pm on weekends 23 Nov – 22 Dec, daily 27-31 Dec

It’s the season of cheer and a visit to Greenway is sure to fill your heart with a cosy glow.

The Georgian Manor house is decked out for the holidays, inspired by holidays past when Agatha Christie and her family would gather at Greenway to celebrate and spend quality time together.

The cosy rooms will be trimmed with traditional decorations and visitors can imagine what the holidays would have been like with as the family played Christmas games, enjoyed feasts at the dining table and read books by the fire.

Bringing the house to life, volunteer pianists will fill the rooms with beloved carols and songs, and families can have a go at festive crafts in the House Kitchen.

Outside, visitors can head off around the garden on a Christmas wreath trail, ‘Rocking around the Christmas Wreath’. Twelve wreaths will be dotted around the garden, all hand created and decorated by teams of staff and volunteers and inspired by our favourite Christmas songs, from number ones to radio classics.

Find the wreaths, guess the Christmas title and sing your answers out loud for all to hear. There’s even the chance to pose for a Christmas photo at one of two twinkly stations.

If visiting Greenway by car, you’ll need to book a parking space in advance through the website. Christmas activities are free, normal admissions apply.

Christmas at Coleton Fishacre

11am-4pm on weekends 30 Nov – 15 Dec, daily 18 Dec- 1 Jan 2025 (excluding Christmas Day and Boxing Day)

Unwrap a Christmas from the past and experience the enchantment of a bygone era with a glimpse into a festive holiday at Coleton Fishacre.

Step inside the house and imagine Christmas as it would have been in the 1920’s. Elegant rooms are lit by the twinkle of lights and sumptuously decorated trees, swags of greenery plucked from the garden adorn mantlepieces and windowsills, and timeless classics are played on the piano in the Saloon.

You can also peek in the Servants’ Hall and discover how the serving class celebrated with handmade gifts and paper decorations. See if you can spot traditions we still hold dear today.

Whether you’re looking to burn off some of the pre-Christmas excitement or stretch your legs after the holidays, it’s the perfect time to wrap up warm and get outdoors. A wander through the garden will bring sensory delights from winter blooms to heady scents and breath-taking sea views.

Visitors can also take part in a brand new fun-filled outdoor trail this year, featuring new characters Dottie and Doyle the Dalmatian pups. Inspired by the family’s beloved dog Patch, join these new characters as they explore their first Christmas at Coleton Fishacre and search for Father Christmas in the garden.

Christmas activities are free, normal admissions apply.
