An Introduction to The Flavel Arts Centre & Cinema

Nestled in the heart of Dartmouth, The Flavel Arts Centre stands as a vibrant cultural hub for both locals and visitors. Since its opening in 2005, The Flavel has been dedicated to enriching the community through arts, entertainment, and education. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this lively venue is a must-visit for lovers of film, theatre, live music, art and more.

What You’ll Find at The Flavel

The Flavel is much more than just an arts venue – it’s a multi-functional space that hosts a wide range of events for all ages. The 175-seat cinema screens the latest films as well as event cinema from London’s West End, National Theatre and The Royal Opera House. Additionally, the cinema is available for hire for a personalised screening of a film of your choice.

For lovers of live music, The Flavel hosts a range of music events throughout the year with bands, tribute acts, concert bands and recitals, including the renowned International Classical Series.

In addition to the performing arts, The Flavel is also home to a spacious gallery where local artists display their work, giving visitors a taste of the rich creativity that thrives in Dartmouth. Art exhibitions rotate frequently, showcasing a wide range of styles and mediums.

Food and Drink

Complementing the centre’s cultural offerings are the Flavel Café and Flavel Bar.

Serving locally roasted coffee, a selection of teas, and cold drinks, the café is the perfect spot to relax whether you’re taking a break from an event, meeting friends, or just passing through. Open from 10am Monday to Friday, it offers a delicious menu of homemade soups, sandwiches, cakes, and freshly baked scones. Whether you’re looking for a light lunch or a quick coffee break, the café provides a cosy atmosphere for visitors.

The fully licensed Flavel Bar is an ideal spot to unwind before or after a performance, or simply enjoy a relaxed drink in a vibrant cultural setting. The bar enhances the experience of the events on offer within the venue, allowing guests to enjoy a glass of wine during an evening show or grab a refreshing drink during intermissions.

With its welcoming atmosphere, the Flavel Bar is a great place to socialise, and is often open during special occasions and community gatherings, making it a popular spot to connect with others in the heart of Dartmouth’s cultural scene.

Dartmouth Library

Also situated within The Flavel, Dartmouth Library offers a wide range of facilities to residents and visitors alike. Friendly staff are on hand to recommend books and assist with computer use, printing, scanning, and photocopying.

The library hosts book clubs, including one for the visually impaired, and provides a children’s section with regular story sessions and a weekly Bounce & Rhyme for under-5’s.

Other services include free WiFi, public computers, a weekly baby weigh facility, and a home library service.

Community and Learning

A key part of The Flavel’s mission is to support the local community. Beyond entertainment, the centre offers a variety of workshops for both adults and children. From art and drama classes to fitness activities like yoga, there really is something for everyone. These opportunities for learning and personal growth make The Flavel a vital part of Dartmouth’s social and cultural landscape.

Whether you’re looking to catch the latest film, enjoy a live performance, browse local art, or simply relax with a book and coffee, The Flavel has something for everyone.
