Top 5 Places to See in Dartmouth on a Weekend Trip

Guest Blog Post – Blog Management

Weekend getaways are usually unplanned and prompt. Naturally, there is no scope for proper planning or for a robust itinerary. But don’t worry. I will share an exotic destination and offer an easy-to-follow budget-based itinerary for a Dartmouth trip. Every weekend getaway enthusiast would love this one.

Dartmouth is one of the most exotic European destinations for travellers. The scenic setting is also preferred by travellers for the serenity and sombre atmosphere they enjoy here. However, readers may wonder, what’s so special about the place?

It is a quiet town, a county that sits beside the Dart River. Most tourists say that time slows down when they are at Dartmouth. The best part is that it is also a perfect weekend escape destination. If you have two nights and three days to spare, you can easily pick up Dartmouth as your next travel destination.

We visited Dartmouth  on a weekend break in South Devon from the student accommodation Coventry. Crossing Bristol, Bath, and Stratford-on-Avon, I plan to come back again as Dartmouth is such a great town.

1. Dartmouth Castle

It is the most preferred and sought-after destination for any tourist visiting Dartmouth. Inside the castle, there is a garb of ancient history that reiterates tales you have grown up hearing. The walls carved of stone and the stealthy stairs speak volumes about the castle lifestyle.

You will find relics of long, drawn battles fought from here too. But the outstanding feature of the castle is the view that hits you when you step out. The boat drifting away yonder and the streak of the Dart River will mesmerize you.

2. Royal Avenue Gardens

Right in the middle of town, this place is like a breather. Flowers everywhere, fountains doing their thing, benches calling your name. It’s not huge, but it’s charming. But why do people love to visit this site?

Sometimes the place hosts art displays or quirky local events. That makes it a perfect spot to sip coffee and take a break from your daily rush.

3. Greenway House

Agatha Christie fans, this is your holy ground. Her holiday home is tucked away like a secret on the riverbank. You take a ferry to get there, which already feels like an adventure. But how is the house?

It’s full of her stuff, including books, furniture, and little things that make you wonder what she was thinking when she wrote those murder plots. The gardens are dreamy, too. You’ll want to linger. A dreamer would also imagine Hercule Poirot strolling past the rhododendrons.

4. Blackpool Sands

Ten minutes from town and suddenly you’re on a beach that looks like it belongs in a postcard. It’s not sandy, but the fine shingle will catch your attention. It felt weirdly nice underfoot, the last time I was here. The water is another attraction.

It is clear enough to make you want to dive in. Kayaks, paddleboards, or just lying there doing nothing. Choose your pastime. There’s a café that serves seafood, so fresh it tastes like the ocean. You’ll probably stay longer than you planned.

5. Britannia Royal Naval College

You’ll see it before you get there. This massive building sits like a king on the hill. It’s been training naval officers for a long time. The tours are worth it.

Big halls, old traditions, stories of sailors who went on to change history. But the view from up there steals the show. River Dart winding below, the rooftops glinting in the sun, takes the view to a new level. Take a photo, remember the frame.

Weekend Itinerary: 2 Nights, 3 Days

  • Friday Evening

Roll into Dartmouth. Check into a cozy B&B. The average pocket pinch would be $120 a night, give or take. Stroll along the embankment while the sun dips. Now, what about dinner?

Go fancy at The Seahorse. They serve seafood that’ll make you close your eyes and smile. The average pinch would be around $50 per person.

  • Saturday

Dedicate the morning to enjoying the castle view. Entry’s about $10. Walk the coastal path if your legs agree. Lunch near Royal Avenue Gardens, maybe a riverside café. The pocket pinch here is around $20. Then, hop on a river cruise ($20) and let the water do the talking. Dinner at The Angel, which is another local gem. The budget is $60 per person. Sleep like a log.

  • Sunday

Start with Greenway House. Ferry costs $15, and entry costs another $15. But it’s worth every penny. Then Blackpool Sands for a lazy beach afternoon. Grab lunch there ($25). Head back, pack up, and promise yourself you’ll return.

Total for Two People:

  • Stay: £240
  • Food: £250
  • Fun stuff: £100

What’s the total? Around $590. Not bad for a weekend that feels like a mini-vacation.

Things International Tourists Should Know

First, when you arrive, you need to know which airport is closest. It is Exeter. Then a scenic drive or a train to Totnes, then a ferry. Renting a car makes life easier. But what about the weather?

It is usually moody. Pack layers and waterproofs. Also, pick shoes that can handle a muddy path. Usually, foreign tourists may struggle with tipping here. Waiters demand 10–12% in restaurants, so bear with it. Cards work almost everywhere, but keep some GBP cash for tiny shops. The next concern is the mobile signal. It is patchy in spots. Download offline maps.

Why You Must Come Here?

Dartmouth isn’t loud. It doesn’t scream for attention. It whispers. And if you listen, while standing on a castle wall or sipping coffee in the gardens, you’ll get why people keep coming back. A weekend here feels like pressing pause on life. And honestly? Who doesn’t need that once in a while?
