With its picturesque harbour, historic buildings and beautiful natural light, it’s no wonder Dartmouth has long attracted artists and makers. Today, the town continues to nurture a vibrant creative scene, with galleries, studios and artisan shops dotted along its charming streets. Whether you’re a keen collector, a curious browser or a budding artist, Dartmouth offers plenty to explore.
The town’s artistic energy is reflected in its busy calendar of events. Art and craft fairs, exhibitions, and seasonal markets take place throughout the year, giving visitors the chance to browse original work, meet the makers, and buy one-of-a-kind pieces to take home. Many of these events are held in central locations and are free to attend, making them ideal for a spontaneous browse or a planned day out.
Alongside these public events, Dartmouth also offers opportunities to get involved. From one-off taster sessions to short creative workshops, there are often chances to try your hand at a new skill or learn directly from local artists. While availability can vary throughout the year, it’s not uncommon to find classes in painting, pottery, printmaking, or textile crafts, many of which are suitable for beginners.
Some events also include live demonstrations or open studio elements, offering a rare glimpse into the creative process. These moments of insight add another layer to the visitor experience – and often deepen the appreciation for the skill and time involved in each creation.
Whether you’re in town for a weekend or staying longer, these events offer a brilliant way to experience Dartmouth from a different perspective. They bring together locals and visitors alike and add colour, energy and creativity to the town’s social calendar.
Event details can occasionally change, so it’s always worth checking the latest information before making plans. New events are added regularly, particularly in the lead-up to school holidays and major events.

Event Details
We’ve organised a number of community-based workshops so that children of all ages, families and friends who want to join the lantern procession all have the opportunity to make and carry their own lantern:
11th and 12th October at Dartmouth Community Cafe, Old Market Square.
18th and 19th October at Dartmouth Community Cafe, Old Market Square.
25th and 26th October at Dartmouth Guildhall.
29th and 31st October at the Flavel.
15th and 16th November at Dartmouth Academy.
Except for the Community Cafe (where space is limited) there’s no need to book. If it’s super busy, you might just have to wait a bit.
To book places for the Community Cafe workshops, please phone 07496 349234.
We’ll provide all the materials to make your lantern. But you’ll need to provide your own lights.
Also, there’s no charge for the workshop. But if you can spare a few pennies, there will be a donation tin to help with next year’s Candlelit event.
Please remember to bring your own lights. We recommend these:Â https://amzn.eu/d/hjzfP4O.
